Don't caulk the wagon if you have more than 6 oxen and/or 900 lbs of food. If you feel that it is necessary, hire a ferry. I recommend not buying more than 1000 lbs of food when you first leave Independence, Missouri. Even though your score won't be the best, it'll be a little easier considering you get $1600 to start off with.
